Research Summary

Research Summary
Oliveira’s research is centered around two key areas: therapeutic nutrition for the prevention, treatment, and remission of type 2 diabetes, and the translation of lifestyle-based research into real-world knowledge and practice.

Biography

Biography

I hold a BSc in Nutrition and Dietetics from Brazil, where my interest in research began through volunteer work in exercise science labs. This led to an MSc in Neuroscience at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, focusing on antioxidant vitamins and Alzheimer’s disease. Motivated by early research awards and publications, I pursued a PhD in Biochemistry and Immunology, continuing my work on antioxidant vitamins in the context of type 1 diabetes.

After a career pause to raise my children, I resumed research as a Postdoctoral Scholar at UBC Okanagan under Dr. Jonathan Little’s supervision, leading clinical nutrition studies on low-carbohydrate diets and type 2 diabetes. I then transitioned into a Clinical Research Coordinator role, where I contributed to multiple clinical trials and co-developed a knowledge mobilization initiative for type 2 diabetes remission, originally launched as “Remission Possible” and now expanded as “Type 2 Remission.”

During 2024, I served as Research and Admin Manager at UBC Okanagan’s Faculty of Medicine, supporting investigators and trainees in research through the Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention & Management.

Currently, as a Registered Dietitian and Research Associate (MSHRBC-HP-I award) affiliated with the School of Health and Exercise Sciences, I lead randomized controlled trials, pilot implementation studies, and knowledge translation initiatives focused on how nutrition and lifestyle interventions can prevent, manage, and reverse chronic conditions.

Research Interests & Projects

Research Interests

  1. How do low-carbohydrate dietary strategies affect blood glucose regulation in individuals with type 2 diabetes?
  2. What is the role of lifestyle interventions in achieving remission of type 2 diabetes?
  3. How can knowledge translation initiatives focused lifestyle changes for type 2 diabetes effectively engage the public and influence understanding, attitudes, and health-related behaviors?
